Ms. Zelenock's 2nd Grade 2020-2021: March 1

It was really nice to spend a full five days with students this week. It feels like we were able to get caught up in a few areas and make good progress. Routine is nice as well!

I am looking forward to the last stretch of second grade. It is always a time of immense growth. We only have about 70 days left in our school year and I just know it is going to fly. Miss Grimm and I are brainstorming ways to celebrate this special year we have had with your kids. We are also brainstorming ways to bring "virtual field trips" to our kids here since we are not able to take actual trips this year. More info as we figure details out:)

Look for some end of marking period assessments to come home this week and next. If you have any questions please reach out. A "2" indicates that your student is making good progress towards mastery of the standard. A "3" indicates that a standard is mastered.

Report cards are being filled out on Friday and will be sent home the following week. Friday is a half day for students.

Math

We are going to be focusing on adding and subtracting double and triple digit numbers for the remainder of the year. The actual second grade standard is written as-

2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract within 1,000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding and subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds and subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, and ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

As you can see there is a lot to understand and a lot of skills to demonstrate within this standard. This will take lots of practice, patience, and perseverance on the part of your child. You can help your second grader by continuing to practice basic facts to and from 10. They can also practice in IXL sections E, F, G, H, and M.

In addition to practicing the above standard we will continue with our regular math units: measuring, graphing, geometry, story problems, and fractions.

Reading

Students are immersing themselves into informational text. We are identifying text features and recognizing the value they add to our understanding of a presented topic. My hope is that by the end of the year students will no longer ask, "Do I have to read that part too?" :)

Writing

In a week we will begin to focus on informational writing. We will start with focusing on text features and move toward a complete piece of writing. The first feature we will focus on is captions. Students will take pictures with their computers. We will write captions for the pictures they take.

Science

We began our new unit on Physical Properties. This week students made hats to protect them from the sun using materials they might have packed on a boat, maybe in a picnic basket.
