Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed some family time over the last week. Upon our return we will welcome a new student to our class. This will bring our total to seventeen.
Please remind your student to wear layers- always have a sweatshirt for cool mornings and a t-shirt underneath for warm afternoons. Pack a water bottle, a snack or two, and charge/bring computers.
Math
We will begin working with fractions and continue exploring 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. Following is the correlating standard:
Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
A primary focus will continue to be addition and subtraction; now working with triple digits. We are still staying away from the traditional American method of "borrow and carry". That will be introduced a little later. Students are fast and successful with the methods we are practicing right now. Following is the standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.7Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.
Reading and Writing
2nd graders will continue to strengthen their understanding and use of text features in informational text. Students will locate, identify the purpose, and describe what information is derived from the feature. Students will practice using text features in their own writing.
In addition, our students will practice comparing and contrasting various texts; identifying important points and describing what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe. Following are the standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.5Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.7Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.
Support at Home
Read, Read, Read! Students should be reading each day for 20-30 minutes. Practicing basic math facts is still critical, especially subtraction. Using IXL, sections I, J, U, and W will support our work at school. Reading on Epic or Moby Informational Text will support reading.
